The seat cushion is attached to the frame of the chair with screws and you need to remove the seat from the chair by using a screwdriver. Once you have removed the seat, the next step is to remove the hard backing material of the seat. This is usually cardboard and is attached to the underside of the seat cushion. With the help of scissors, cut the old upholstery fabric from the seat cushion and remove it completely. This is an important step in reupholstering dining room chair seats. If you upholster the new fabric over the old one, it will give a very bulky look.
The next step in how to reupholster a chair is to lay the cushion top over the new fabric and mark the pattern with a chalk marker. Add 4 inches of fabric measurement on all the sides of the pattern and cut out the upholstery fabric. Always keep this allowance of 4 inches, otherwise you will not have enough fabric to wrap the edges of the cushion. Once you are done cutting the fabric, lay the fabric with its unpatterned side facing towards you on a clean work table. Place the cushion over the fabric in such a way that the underside of the cushion is facing towards you. Fold the fabric on one side of the cushion and staple it to the cushion with the staple gun. When one edge of the cushion is stapled, pull the fabric taunt over the cushion seat and staple the other three sides. If the cushion is a curved one, then you will have to fold the fabric in pleats before stapling it to the cushion. Next staple the cardboard backing that you had removed earlier. Place the reupholstered cushion back on the frame of the chair and screw it in place.
